Nowadays, in America, we have lost the authenticity of European cafés as they existed in the the 19th and 20th centuries. I long for the ability to walk into a café, and in doing so, enter a reality of salon culture that’s been dead for over 60 years.

But in an age of globalization and widespread social media, I have accepted that I will only get so close to achieving that ideal. Luckily – at least for the time being –  I think I’ve found my solution: Κέκκος

It only takes one visit to know if a café is worth your time, devotion, and friendship.

Κέκκος only needed five minutes.

That’s a rare quality. Some of which I believe to be related to the normality of social interaction in Greece and the overall difference in sincerity of individuals. Regardless, I have found in Κέκκος the refreshing warmth of a third space I have been searching for.

As a coffee connoisseur and a supporter of small local businesses, I feel obligated to share this experience not only with my friends and family at home, but also with my fellow CYA students living here in Athens.

If I’m being completely honest, I want to keep this little wonderland a secret so I can enjoy my paradise of coffee, pastries, and the conversations had with the loving Κέκκος family of Dimitri, Katerina, Helena, Maria and Marinella, (to name a few) all to myself.

But, I also cannot seem to fathom why anyone living in the Pangrati neighborhood would be getting their coffee experience from anywhere but Κέκκος.

Within seconds of walking through the always-open door, you will be greeted, smiled at, welcomed, and served with the utmost kindness. Not only is the hospitality and service of this café outstanding, but the quality of goods is equally as excellent.

Plan on sitting outside and studying a while? You’ll get your coffee, along with an ice cold glass of water and a few shortbread cookies, free of charge.

Want to socialize or meet the locals? All you have to do is ask! When they aren’t running around serving all of their customers, the Κέκκος family members are always interested in talking to the students.

Just take a seat, they will suit your needs above and beyond your expectations; that is my promise to you.

So if you haven’t already visited, please, I urge you to take in the full Κέκκος experience, you will not regret it.

I would like to specially thank Katerina and Dimitri for providing my morning caffeine, for always making my day wonderful, and most importantly, for making me feel at home while I am experiencing a world that lies furthest away from my comfort zones.

My love and appreciation goes out to this family of hard working, genuine humans who have laid the foundation for the remainder of my adventure being incredible.

Thank you.
